Owl pellet discovery

Get your kids all set for an exciting morning of discovery at Bere Marsh Farm. We'll learn all about owls and how to dissect owl pellets, finding out what they had for their dinner!

At this very relaxed drop in event between 10am – 12.30pm, kids and their parents will take a short walk along the Dorset Trailway to CRT’s Barn Owl Barn to meet Nick Dobbs - CRT Community Engagement Manager and wildlife enthusiast. Nick will share some interesting facts about UK owl species and give each child a barn owl pellet.

At our Threshing Barn, owl experts and CRT volunteers Karen Holliday and Alison Chopping will show everyone how to dissect an owl pellet using tweezers. Then it is over to the children to get hands on and try themselves on their own owl pellets, all with help from Karen, Alison and Nick.

Useful fact sheets will be provided, and we will also label each child’s findings at the end for further analysis after the event. Some bones can look rather similar, and we find children often like confirmed exactly what they found, so Nick will email parents/guardians individually after the event to confirm what their children uncovered.

Throughout the event, our Buzz café will be open, where you can buy drinks and delicious home cooked treats.

Essential Information

This drop in event is free of charge. You can turn up on the day, but to guarantee your child's place we recommend booking their free place online (below) so we know you are coming.
Donations are welcome online or on the day to help support the conservation work of the CRT.
Suitable for children aged 7+. All children must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian.
Subject to weather, public parking in a specially designated and clearly signed field is available at Bere Marsh Farm.

Join us for a morning of floral creativity with pre-mixed fabric paints and bespoke daisy & meadow flower stencils designed by Melanie Ward. Learn how to print onto fabric using stencils as you design your own tote bag to take home.
In search of newts

How many people does it take to catch a newt? In the case of the first formal newt survey ever held at Bere Marsh Farm, it’s actually four members of the Countryside Regeneration Trust’s (CRT) staff, plus two extra conservationists licensed to carry out the operation.
River Stour nature walk

Fungi foray

Join us for an autumnal fungi foray at Bere Marsh Farm. Led by expert mycologist Andy Knott, we'll explore a variety of habitats as we search for the many species of fungi on the farm. From the tiniest emergent mushrooms so easily overlooked to flamboyant conspicuous species like Fly Agaric, Andy will help identify what we find and have plenty of fascinating facts to share along the way.
Marvellous moths and beautiful butterflies 2

Discover an array of moths and butterflies at Bere Marsh Farm. Led by moth expert Jack Oughton, he'll open the moth traps set out around the farm the night before for everyone to see and discuss. We'll then go on an hour's guided nature walk around the farm, focusing on butterflies, as well as the other wildlife spotted along the way.

What We Do

The CRT promotes nature-friendly farming to help reverse biodiversity decline and combat climate change. We believe nature is integral to good farming and we protect, promote and regenerate our land and all life on it. We put our philosophy into practice on over 2,000 acres of working farms, small-holdings and woodland across England.
Slow-worms – the gardener’s best friend

The UK has 6 native reptile species including the curious slow-worm (Anguis fragilis). Although serpent-like in appearance, slow-worms are in fact limbless lizards and an amazing example of de-evolution.
