  • What We Do

What We Do

The Countryside Regeneration Trust (CRT) protects, promotes, and regenerates our land and all life on it.

Our countryside is in state of crisis - farmland wildlife species are declining, smaller farms are struggling to compete, people have grown out of touch with the landscape, and future generations will not know where their food originates.

At the CRT we take a holistic approach to tackle the biodiversity crisis. Through our ownership of 19 properties across England, we work with tenant farmers, wildlife monitors and volunteers to develop and implement sustainable farming methods and vital conservation practices.

Our properties are part of the local community, inviting everyone to share in the wonder of the countryside and instil a desire to protect it:

  • We have converted disused farm buildings into hubs of creativity, allowing local independent businesses to flourish.
  • In 2021 we launched an engaging and exciting education programme bringing nature and farming to children.
  • In Cambridge we have developed a community orchard, bringing people of all ages and walks of life together to cultivate something beautiful.

Our vision is a living, working countryside.

If you’re walking through the woods thinking you are alone with nature, take care because that untidy bush or the shadowy bit under a tree could be a wildlife photographer dressed in camouflage gear.

    Surveying butterflies as biological indicators

Butterflies can be considered biological indicators due to their high sensitivity to environmental change. On farmland, carrying out butterfly surveys can show us how valuable different areas of the farm are for butterflies, shedding light on where some habitat improvement may be needed.

CRT staff enjoyed a trip to Wild Ken Hill in West Norfolk on Friday, the current filming location of BBC’s Springwatch, for a tour of the farm’s productive arable land, where they are introducing the use of regenerative farming techniques.
