There be Hummingbirds! There be Hummingbirds! Well, more precisely Hummingbird Hawk-moths (Macroglossum stellatarum). Social media is awash at the moment with posts about encounters with the curious Hummingbird Hawk-moths. A species normally associated with warmer Mediterranean climates, the summer heatwave in Europe combined with strong southerly winds has led to a much larger than normal migratory influx from the continent of these amazing, ever-restless daytime flying moths. Hummingbird Hawk-moths are now breeding in the UK and their caterpillars feed on bedstraw. Quite a dull moth at rest, they are at their most spectacular in flight and are particularly attracted to purple and yellow flowers from which they expertly extract nectar with their long conspicuous proboscis.
