By Kevin Young, CRT Volunteer

This autumn, volunteers have held three apple picking sessions on Green Farm. Seven people took part, and for one of the sessions we were helped by Emma Matthars, the CRT’s Events Coordinator.

Over a total of 15 hours we picked nearly 1,500 kilos of apples. These are donated to Surrey Garden Cider Centre, who will turn this weight of apples into 500 litres of cider.

Apple picking gives our volunteers the chance to work together on this farm’s beautiful orchard, where there is so much wildlife to see and hear. We lifted some corrugated tin placed in the orchard by Vince Lea, Head of Wildlife Monitoring, and discovered three slow worms! We also spotted a tiger moth and a greater spotted woodpecker, and we regularly hear buzzards mewing and goldfinches squabbling.
