Close to Denby Dale in West Yorkshire, Margaret Wood is the furthest north of all CRT's properties. It is peaceful and in spring has a carpet of magnificent bluebells. With just 32 acres of semi-ancient woodland and pasture, it is one of our smaller properties, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in wildlife and beauty.
We do not have a tenant farmer at Margaret Wood, but a thriving, dedicated support group. The pasture is let to a neighbour who uses it to graze sheep.
Our volunteers follow a gentle-touch woodland management plan, so it thrives with flora and fauna. The wood and pasture is a springtime wildlife haven with carpets of bluebells, great spotted woodpeckers among the trees and curlews on the meadows.
On the property, there is a large modern barn used by volunteers to store equipment and to rest after a busy day completing conservation activities.
Further from the barn down a short path is the open pasture. The dry stone wall that separates the pasture and the woodland has been repaired and sections have been completely replaced by the CRT.
At the end of the pasture is the amazing semi-ancient woodland. The pond, completely created by volunteers from a small stream, this attracts a range of wildlife and is a core element of the farm's education programme.

At CRT we support and encourage our tenant farmers to use sustainable farming methods wherever possible, because we know these practices positively benefit the environment, wildlife and ultimately, humankind.
We provide support, resources and volunteers to assist the conservation activities across our sites. For example, volunteers on all the properties have planted hedgerows, resulting in wildlife corridors and increased biodiversity.
Our wildlife monitors complete regular surveys of each site, covering large species like deer or otters to invertebrates like freshwater shrimp and water beetles. Below are some of the most iconic species residing on our sites.
