Pond Explorer

Pierrepont farm is a stunning and wildlife-rich farm that provides a diversity of habitats for native plants and animals. The pond area is teeming with wildlife both beneath the surface and within the surrounding hedgerow. Our three pond dipping platforms give the children the opportunity to learn to pond dip, identify species and learn about lifecycles.

Reception Class

Learn how to pond dip and discover how many different creatures live beneath the water. Play the creature feature puzzle game and try matching the right heads, bodies, legs and tails to complete the picture. Go dragonfly and damselfly spotting then create your very own dragonfly to take home.

Years 1 & 2

Head to our wildlife pond and explore the fascinating creatures that live beneath the water. Work out ways to group them according to similarities and differences and find out who eats what. Explore the hedgerows around the pond and discover why they are such an important feature of nature friendly farming.

Years 3-6

Go pond dipping and discover how many fascinating creatures live underwater. Record and name them with the help of ID charts and learn who sits at the top and bottom of the food chain. Explore the plants in the pond and hedgerows and learn how to classify them. Discover what a pollinator is and where they fit into the plant’s lifecycle.

What We Do

The CRT promotes nature-friendly farming to help reverse biodiversity decline and combat climate change. We believe nature is integral to good farming and we protect, promote and regenerate our land and all life on it. We put our philosophy into practice on over 2,000 acres of working farms, small-holdings and woodland across England.
Slow-worms – the gardener’s best friend

The UK has 6 native reptile species including the curious slow-worm (Anguis fragilis). Although serpent-like in appearance, slow-worms are in fact limbless lizards and an amazing example of de-evolution.
